Rose of Sharon Childminding Volunteer
After retiring in 2014 following a 40-year career as a social worker, I knew I wanted to continue giving back. I began volunteering with local organizations, where I walked alongside individuals and families during some of life's most difficult moments. While that work was incredibly meaningful, I also felt drawn to an organization that represented the beginning of life's journey - a place filled with hope, possibility, and new beginnings. That's what led me to Rose of Sharon.
From the moment I began volunteering as a childminder, I saw the incredible difference Rose of Sharon makes in the lives of young mothers and their children. One of my favourite parts of volunteering is spending time with the little ones. There is nothing quite like holding a sleeping baby in your arms or chasing a toddler around the playroom. Watching these children grow while their mothers learn, build confidence, and work toward their goals is truly rewarding. I have also loved watching Rose of Sharon grow over the years. Moving into the new building has created such a beautiful, welcoming space for families. Every time I volunteer, I am reminded of the kindness and support the staff provide to everyone.
One memory I will always treasure is attending the York Academy high school graduation ceremony several years ago. Over the course of the year, I got to know one of the students and her little one well. At graduation, she proudly introduced me to her parents and shared that she was the first person in her family to graduate from high school - I had to hold back tears. Seeing a young woman overcome obstacles and achieve something so significant for herself and her child is something I'll never forget. Moments like that remind me how important it is that young mothers have the opportunity to complete their education and build better lives for themselves and their children.
As a member of University Women Aurora/Newmarket, I have had the privilege of seeing our Charitable Trust provide scholarships to young women pursuing post-secondary education. Our Outreach Committee has also helped provide essentials such as electronics and art supplies to support their educational journeys. Watching these young women receive those unexpected gifts and awards at graduation is always a joyful reminder that encouragement and opportunity can truly change a life.
